Bedrooms are the one room in a home that need to offer a feeling of comfort, support and safety at all times. A bedroom should be a personal space that reflects the personality of the person using it. It seems more and more effort is going into making bedrooms distinctive and dramatic. A bed with a canopy is a very good way to add a little punch to a room.

In most cases a bedroom will be a space for sleeping, clothes storage and rest. The bed is usually the largest piece of furniture in the room and the focal point for decorating. Often this space is void of any real architectural features so the furniture selected for the room is the only real decorating features available. Selecting a bed with a canopy is a sure way to command attention when entering the room.

When bed canopies are used they are usually covered in some sort of fabric but they do not have to be. If the detail of the canopy itself is strong enough they can simply be a decorating on their own. For example, if the canopy is heavily carved or ornate it is not necessary to cover it. However, a simple drape of a soft scarf from post to post can draw attention without detracting from the beauty of the woodwork. In this case a soft fabric is important so it can flow and drape with ease.

In some instances a canopy can be quite elaborate. Fabrics are often selected to compliment the rest of the room. This does not mean that the fabric on the canopy has to be the same as the windows or bedding but it does need to be a nice blend. For example, if the windows are covered in a rich damask curtain fabric the bed canopy could be a complimentary stripe or small pattern to match the damask. It is a good idea to select all fabrics that will be used in the room at the same time to be certain the match is pleasing.

A bed canopy can be made from the same material as the bed or sometimes it can be an elaborate metal canopy. The detail options are very varied and choices are quite abundant for canopies. When using a canopy bed it is a good idea to consider the height of the ceiling and size of the room. They tend to look better in rooms that are not extremely small and a high ceiling adds to the drama of a canopy bed.
